Which Sights in Shanghai Should You Visit on Your First Trip?

Shanghai is a city where old streets, modern skyscrapers, riverside views, gardens, museums, and busy shopping areas exist within the same urban landscape. For travelers, the sights in Shanghai are not limited to one type of attraction. Some places show the city's history, while others highlight its modern lifestyle and impressive architecture. The official Shanghai tourism guide lists landmarks such as the Bund, Yuyuan Garden, Oriental Pearl Tower, Nanjing Road, Shanghai Disneyland, Wukang Road, and several major museums among the city's places to explore. To get more news about sights in shanghai, you can visit meet-in-shanghai.net official website.

The Bund: Shanghai’s Classic City View

The Bund is probably the first place many visitors associate with Shanghai. This historic waterfront stretches for about 1.5 kilometers along the Huangpu River. On one side are historic buildings in different architectural styles, while across the river stands the modern skyline of Lujiazui.

The contrast is what makes the Bund special. You can look at old stone buildings and then turn your eyes toward the Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai Tower, and other skyscrapers. It feels like two different periods of the city are facing each other.

In my view, the Bund is best experienced slowly rather than treated as a quick photo stop. A walk around sunset gives you changing light, cooler air, and a beautiful transition from daytime to the illuminated skyline. The Bund is also officially recognized as a protected historical district.

Oriental Pearl Tower and Lujiazui

For travelers who prefer modern city scenery, Lujiazui is another major attraction. The Oriental Pearl Tower stands beside the Huangpu River and combines sightseeing with dining, shopping, entertainment, exhibitions, and river experiences. At 468 meters high, it provides wide views over Shanghai.

What I like about this area is the sense of scale. Standing among the skyscrapers makes Shanghai feel much larger than it appears from street level. Visitors can also explore nearby landmarks such as Shanghai Tower and the Shanghai World Financial Center.

If you enjoy architecture and photography, Lujiazui deserves more than a short visit. The buildings look particularly impressive when viewed from the Bund across the river.

Yuyuan Garden: A Different Side of Shanghai

Shanghai is famous for its skyline, but Yuyuan Garden shows a much quieter side of the city. Located in the old city area, this classical Chinese garden features pavilions, rockeries, ponds, and traditional architectural details.

The garden dates back more than 400 years and is considered an important example of a Jiangnan classical garden. Nearby streets also offer traditional snacks, shops, and the atmosphere of the old city.

Personally, I think Yuyuan Garden is most enjoyable when you stop worrying about seeing everything. The small details are the real attraction: carved windows, curved roofs, unusual rocks, and quiet corners can easily be missed if you walk too quickly.

Museums and Cultural Attractions

Travelers interested in Chinese history should leave time for Shanghai's museums. Shanghai Museum, Shanghai History Museum, and Shanghai Museum East provide different ways to understand the city and Chinese culture.

Shanghai Museum has a long history and a large collection of Chinese art and cultural objects, including ceramics, bronzes, calligraphy, and paintings. The city also has museums covering science, maritime history, the World Expo, and contemporary art.

This is one of the strongest features of the sights in Shanghai: sightseeing does not have to mean standing outside and taking photographs. A museum visit can add historical context to everything you see on the streets.

Nanjing Road and Xintiandi

For a more energetic experience, Nanjing Road is a natural choice. It combines shopping, restaurants, commercial buildings, and constant pedestrian activity. It is particularly useful for visitors who want to experience Shanghai as a living city rather than only a collection of landmarks.

Xintiandi offers a different atmosphere. Its restored shikumen buildings combine historical Shanghai architecture with modern restaurants, shops, and entertainment. The result is a neighborhood where traditional exterior details meet a contemporary lifestyle.

How Should You Explore Shanghai?

The biggest mistake is trying to visit every famous sight in one day. Shanghai is large, and different attractions offer completely different experiences. A better plan is to group nearby places together.

For example, you can combine Lujiazui with the Oriental Pearl Tower, then cross toward the Bund and continue to Nanjing Road. Another day could focus on Yuyuan Garden, the old city, museums, and Xintiandi. Shanghai's official tourism recommendations also combine the Bund, Yuyuan Garden, museums, Lujiazui, and Nanjing Road into practical sightseeing routes.

Final Thoughts

The best sights in Shanghai are valuable because they show different sides of the same city. The Bund represents history and architecture, Lujiazui represents modern development, Yuyuan Garden offers traditional beauty, while museums reveal deeper stories behind the city.

My personal recommendation is not to judge Shanghai by one landmark. Its real character comes from the contrast between old and new, quiet gardens and crowded streets, historic buildings and futuristic towers. Give yourself enough time to walk between the major sights, look beyond the obvious photo spots, and notice the small details. That is when Shanghai becomes more than a tourist destination and starts to feel like a city with its own rhythm.
