The Nigeria Telecom Market Value proposition has expanded dramatically beyond traditional voice and SMS services, encompassing a comprehensive ecosystem of digital services that create significant economic and social value. Industry revenues reached approximately ₦13 trillion, with earnings rising from ₦5.3 trillion in 2023 to ₦7.67 trillion in 2024, a 44.7 percent increase . The sector contributed N18.5 trillion to real GDP in 2025, representing 8.3 percent of total economic output, with the Information and Communications Technology sector contributing 11.18 percent to GDP in Q2 2025 . The total industry value is estimated at about N75 trillion in cumulative value over the years, firmly entrenching telecoms as Nigeria's most important non-oil economic pillar . This value creation extends far beyond direct economic contributions, serving as the infrastructure backbone that underpins growth across banking, trade, education, healthcare, and public services . The ubiquitous mobile phone has become a banking tool, driving financial inclusion to previously unbanked rural populations and facilitating the rise of mobile money operators and the subsequent Fintech boom . Companies like Flutterwave, Paystack, and Interswitch are direct beneficiaries of this telecom-enabled financial ecosystem, while USSD technology continues to play a central role in the Central Bank of Nigeria's cashless policy .

Data services have emerged as the primary driver of value creation, surpassing voice calls as the largest revenue source . By December 2025, roughly 148 million Nigerians were actively connected to the internet, consuming an estimated 1.4 million terabytes of data in a single month . This surge in data consumption reflects how deeply digital services have become embedded in daily life, from streaming and fintech transactions to remote work and online education . Broadband penetration crossed a symbolic threshold, closing 2025 at 51.97 percent, marking the first time coverage has moved beyond the halfway mark . The value of data services is further demonstrated by financial results, with MTN Nigeria's data earnings surging 85.6 percent year-over-year to N701.1 billion . Airtel's data revenue grew by 38.1 percent, supported by a 47.4 percent surge in usage . The shift toward digital services has forced operators to rethink how data is priced and packaged, moving beyond selling connectivity as a standalone product to positioning data as an enabler of digital experiences . This has led to bundled offerings that integrate third-party services such as streaming platforms, fintech solutions, utilities, health, and telemedicine services . PwC notes that telecom operators now account for about 77 percent of streaming partnerships worldwide, reflecting their strategy of using content and lifestyle services to drive customer retention and engagement .

The value creation extends to employment and social development, with the telecom sector creating hundreds of thousands of direct and indirect jobs, estimated at over 2.3 million jobs within a decade . The sector has fundamentally altered Nigerian social dynamics, with mobile broadband enabling access to remote learning resources and telehealth services that bridge geographical divides, especially in underserved regions . Instant, affordable communication has strengthened family and social ties across Nigeria's vast diaspora and within the diverse ethnic landscape . The mobile phone has become the primary source of news and information for most Nigerians, fostering greater civic engagement . The sector's liberalisation attracted billions in Foreign Direct Investment, becoming one of the most significant recipients of private capital in the country's history . Operators have contributed substantial revenue to the government through taxes, levies, and spectrum licensing fees, such as the $820.8 million generated from the initial 5G spectrum licenses . The value of the sector is also reflected in its contribution to digital transformation across industries, with e-commerce platforms like Jumia and Konga relying entirely on mobile and internet connectivity to connect millions of buyers and sellers across the country . Small and Medium Enterprises now use mobile phones for inventory management, marketing, and payment processing, dramatically reducing the cost of doing business .

Looking ahead, the value creation potential of the telecom sector is expected to expand significantly as the industry transitions from connectivity provider to digital infrastructure enabler. The NCC's Spectrum Roadmap 2026-2030 aims to provide the high-speed infrastructure necessary to achieve President Bola Tinubu's goal of a $1 trillion digital economy by 2030 . The roadmap projects national mobile data traffic will nearly triple from 11.9 exabytes in 2025 to 31.7 exabytes by 2030, reflecting the growing importance of data services to economic development . The convergence of telecom with smart city initiatives, AI-powered services, cloud computing, and IoT devices is creating opportunities for operators to provide digital infrastructure that powers these services . This includes cloud computing, edge data centres, cybersecurity, enterprise connectivity, private 5G networks, digital identity solutions, AI platforms, and smart city infrastructure . With revenue from traditional voice services continuing to decline, diversification into digital infrastructure could become one of the industry's strongest growth drivers . However, realizing this value creation potential will require addressing persistent challenges, including rural connectivity gaps, infrastructure vandalism, foreign exchange volatility, and smartphone affordability . The industry's ability to move beyond basic connectivity and integrate advanced networks, content, and lifestyle services into coherent value propositions will determine its long-term sustainability and value creation capacity .
