There is a very famous scene in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit after Gandalf assists Bilbo and Thorin’s Company in their escape from the trolls, in which the hobbit, the dwarves, and the wizard raid their treasure store in the cave in which the trolls were living.

An Illustrious History That Spans Back Much Farther Than The Hobbit

Though it’s best known among fans of The Lord of the Rings as Gandalf’s sword, Glamdring actually was forged during the First Age for Turgon, the elven High King of Gondolin. 

Turgon likely wielded the sword Glamdring in The War of the Great Jewels against the forces of Morgoth, and later in the Fall of Gondolin. At some point, after the power of the elves in the North of Middle Earth waned, Glamdring went missing, and would remain missing for 6000 years. 

That was until Gandalf saved Thorin’s company from the trolls that had beset them, after which point they looted the troll’s lair. Among many other unique treasures, the company uncovered Sting, Orcrist, and Glamdring.

Glamdring was a hand-and-a-half sword that was described as having a jeweled hilt and accompanied by a beautiful scabbard. Gandalf wielded it to great effect in the movies against the goblins in the Misty Mountains, who referred to it timorously as “Beater.” 

As for the name, Glamdring is Quenya for “Foe-Hammer”, another appellation for this sword. 

Like Sting, and being previously owned by other High Elven kings, Glamdring’s blade glowed with a cold light whenever orcs or goblins were around. Sting glowed blue, but Glamdring was described as glowing with a white light. 

This feature, however, is not exhibited in the films, though in the books, it is stated after Gandalf’s fight with the Great Goblin as glowing “bright as blue flame for delight in the killing of the Great Goblin.” Elsewhere, as stated, the sword is described as glowing with a white light.
