Maintaining an Automatic Stiletto

An automatic stiletto can be quite a fidget-friendly tool, and it can be a practical tool to carry as well, if only for defensive applications. Of course, you need to know how to maintain it as well, if you expect it to last. Here are some high-level notes.

  • Keep it sharp. They say a sharp knife is a safe knife because it takes less force to use it to cut something. The same is true here with a stiletto. Also, with a stiletto, you have the flexibility to keep one edge sharper than the other so they can be used for different applications if you so desire.
  • Store it wisely. This is one of the most important notes for taking care of an automatic stiletto, or any knife. The general advice is to store it somewhere cool and dry and also preferably out of direct sunlight. High humidity will spell doom for any knife, even one with a stainless blade, and that is true here as well. Worse is the fact that an automatic knife like the one in question will also have internal springs, locks and other mechanisms that will rust and seize if they are exposed to chronic high humidity. So the bottom line here is to ensure that you store the knife somewhere responsible, that is cool and dry.
  • Keep the pivot mechanism clean (if applicable). If you have an OTS, or out-the-side, stiletto, it will have a pivot mechanism that you will need to keep clean. Use compressed air to blast out lint, dust and other debris from time to time to keep it clean and if you ever get the knife wet make sure you thoroughly dry it before storing, otherwise you may rust and seize the pivot mechanism.
  • Disassemble and clean it periodically, If you have an OTF stiletto rather than an OTS model, it will still have internal rails that you will need to keep clean and potentially lubricated. Most automatic knives, stilettos included, are relatively easy to take apart, and that is something you will want to do so you can clean out the interior of the knife. Also, if the blade rides on rails, either make sure they are spotless, or else lubricate them slightly every time you have the knife apart for cleaning.
  • Keep it locked (if possible) when you are carrying it. If your automatic stiletto has a feature that prevents accidental deployment, use it when you are carrying as it will make the knife safer in your pocket.
  • Don’t abuse it or use it for tasks for which it is not well designed. Automatic stilettos have thin, fragile blades that are best adapted to thrusting and piercing. Though a stiletto profile can be used for some slicing and cutting chores, they are absolutely not well adapted to twisting, prying, chopping, or any other hard, brusque tasks that are similar. Avoid the use of your stiletto for any chores like this. Remember what the blade pattern is good for and restrict your use of the knife to those tasks.
