An Aging Population Is Changing the Technology Conversation

One of the strongest forces behind the adoption of long-term care software is the increasing number of older adults requiring ongoing support. Aging populations are accompanied by a greater prevalence of chronic conditions that require continuous monitoring, medication management, documentation, and coordination between caregivers and healthcare professionals.

Grand View Research highlights conditions such as dementia, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, heart disease, Parkinson's disease, and other chronic illnesses as factors increasing the need for long-term care services. In March 2025, the World Health Organization reported that around 57 million people globally were living with dementia, with more than 60% living in low- and middle-income countries.

For LTC providers, this creates a more complex operating environment. Software can help centralize resident information and make critical records accessible to authorized care teams, reducing reliance on disconnected paperwork and manual processes.

Electronic Health Records Remain at the Core

Electronic Health Records (EHR) represented the largest application segment, accounting for 30.3% of revenue share in 2025. The segment is also expected to record the fastest CAGR from 2026 to 2033.

EHR platforms provide a central location for clinical documentation, resident histories, medication information, care plans, and other essential records. In long-term care environments, where residents may require care from multiple professionals over extended periods, having accessible and organized information can improve coordination.

The broader adoption of EHR systems is also helping facilities move toward more connected care models. Instead of maintaining separate records across departments, integrated platforms can connect clinical, operational, and financial information.

Cloud Deployment Is Changing How Facilities Access Software

The cloud-based segment accounted for 42.4% of revenue share in 2025, making it the leading mode of delivery. It is also expected to grow at the fastest CAGR during the forecast period.

The appeal of cloud technology lies largely in accessibility and scalability. Long-term care facilities operate continuously, and care teams may need access to resident information from different locations and devices. Cloud-based platforms can provide this flexibility while reducing the need for extensive on-site IT infrastructure.

Cloud deployment can also make software upgrades and system expansion easier. As facilities grow or add new functions, they can potentially integrate additional capabilities without completely replacing their existing technology environment.

Nursing Homes Represent a Major End-Use Segment

Nursing homes accounted for 32.5% of revenue share in 2025, making them the largest end-use segment. The segment benefits from the ongoing need for skilled nursing and rehabilitation services and the increasing complexity of resident care.

Software solutions can help nursing homes manage clinical documentation, medication administration, scheduling, billing, resident information, and regulatory requirements. These capabilities become particularly valuable when facilities are managing large numbers of residents and coordinating multiple categories of staff.

At the same time, home healthcare agencies are expected to record the fastest CAGR during the forecast period. This reflects a broader shift toward personalized care delivered in patients' homes rather than exclusively in institutional settings.

Workforce Shortages Are Encouraging Automation

Staff shortages are another important factor influencing technology adoption. Long-term care providers must manage large workloads while maintaining quality of care and regulatory compliance.

Software can reduce the administrative burden associated with documentation, scheduling, payroll, billing, and other repetitive activities. This allows staff to spend less time navigating manual processes and more time on resident-focused activities.

The value of automation becomes particularly evident when staffing resources are limited. Centralized systems can streamline workflows and provide managers with better visibility into staffing requirements, operational performance, and resident needs.

Revenue Cycle Management Is Gaining Importance

Although EHR currently leads the application landscape, Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) is becoming increasingly important. Integrated RCM platforms connect financial activities with clinical and operational information, giving providers a more comprehensive view of revenue-related processes.

Billing, coding, documentation, reimbursement, and financial reporting can be difficult to manage when information is spread across different systems. Integrated platforms can reduce duplication and improve the flow of information between departments.

As LTC facilities face pressure to maintain operational efficiency while controlling costs, demand for technology that connects financial and clinical workflows is expected to increase.

AI and Analytics Are Opening New Possibilities

The next stage of LTC software development is increasingly connected with analytics and artificial intelligence. Modern platforms can use data generated through EHRs and other systems to support more informed decision-making.

Predictive capabilities can potentially help providers identify residents who may require additional attention, monitor operational patterns, and improve resource allocation. Analytics can also help management teams evaluate performance and identify areas where workflows can be improved.

Grand View Research describes the industry's degree of innovation as high, while merger and acquisition activity is characterized as moderate. Recent product developments also demonstrate the growing role of cloud-based business intelligence and AI-enabled healthcare software.

North America Holds the Largest Share

North America dominated the global industry with a 50.3% revenue share in 2025. The region's strong position is supported by an aging population, widespread healthcare IT adoption, demand for integrated care solutions, and the increasing prevalence of chronic conditions.

The U.S. represents the leading country-level market in the region. The country's growing elderly population is creating additional demand for systems capable of supporting care coordination, patient management, documentation, billing, and personalized care.

The U.S. is also facing a growing burden of Alzheimer's disease. Grand View Research notes that an estimated 7.2 million Americans aged 65 and older were living with Alzheimer's dementia in 2025, highlighting the scale of the long-term care challenge.

Asia Pacific Presents Strong Growth Potential

Asia Pacific is projected to be the fastest-growing regional market from 2026 to 2033. Increasing healthcare spending, digital health investments, aging populations, and government support for technology adoption are contributing to regional expansion.

Japan is particularly important because of its rapidly aging population and increasing adoption of technology-enabled care. China, India, South Korea, Australia, and other countries are also developing healthcare IT infrastructure, creating opportunities for LTC software providers.

In India, initiatives such as the Integrated Health Information Platform (IHIP) are supporting the development of interoperable electronic health information systems. Such initiatives can contribute to a more connected digital healthcare environment over time.
