How Much Does Basal Cell Removal Cost?

The cost of private basal cell removal varies considerably because treatment is tailored to the individual tumour. The procedure used, location of the cancer, laboratory testing and any reconstruction can all affect the final fee. Here is what UK patients should consider when estimating the likely cost.

What Does Basal Cell Removal Typically Cost?

There is no single fixed price for private basal cell removal in the UK. Published prices from different clinics show that treatment can range from several hundred pounds for a straightforward excision to more than £2,000 when hospital-based surgery and reconstruction are required.

For example, Oxona Healthcare currently lists a £115 pre-operative appointment, an average £565 fee for elliptical excision and £190 for histopathology. Together, those published charges would total approximately £870 for a typical straightforward pathway, although the exact cost is confirmed after assessment.

At the other end of the range, Waterfront Private Hospital lists basal cell carcinoma surgical excision from £1,495 and excision with reconstruction from £2,195. Its prices include hospital and theatre fees, histology and routine post-operative reviews, illustrating why headline prices between providers cannot always be compared directly.

Dr Arif Aslam currently lists a first private consultation at £240 and a follow-up consultation at £200. His site explains that procedures including biopsies and surgical excisions can involve additional hospital charges, so patients are advised to obtain an individual quotation before treatment.

What Affects the Final Price?

The biggest factor is the treatment you need. Most basal cell carcinomas are treated surgically, but the appropriate approach depends on the cancer's size, subtype, location and risk of returning.

A small, clearly defined BCC in a straightforward location may be suitable for standard surgical excision under local anaesthetic. This involves removing the cancer together with an appropriate margin of surrounding skin and sending the tissue for laboratory examination.

Treatment becomes more expensive when the wound requires additional reconstruction. A small defect may close directly with stitches, whereas a larger facial wound could require a local skin flap or graft. These procedures take more time and require additional surgical expertise.

The location of the cancer can therefore make a substantial difference. Removing a BCC from the arm or trunk may be simpler than treating one close to the nose, eyelid, ear or lip, where conserving healthy tissue and protecting normal function become especially important.

Histology also needs to be considered. Testing the removed tissue helps confirm the diagnosis and can show whether the margins are clear. Some clinics include histopathology in their surgical package, while others charge for it separately.

Does Mohs Surgery Cost More?

Some higher-risk BCCs are treated with Mohs micrographic surgery rather than standard excision. During Mohs, the cancer is removed in stages and the tissue margins are examined immediately. Further tissue is taken only from areas where cancer cells remain.

Mohs is particularly useful for more complex BCCs, including cancers on difficult facial sites, tumours with unclear edges and cancers that have returned following previous treatment. Because it combines specialist surgery with immediate microscopic examination, it can involve higher fees than a straightforward excision.

The eventual cost may also depend on how many Mohs stages are needed and how the final wound is reconstructed. Dr Arif Aslam's guidance explains that private Mohs fees vary according to tumour complexity, reconstruction and the clinic setting.

A higher initial price does not necessarily mean poorer value. For an appropriate high-risk BCC, preserving healthy tissue and carefully checking the margins may reduce the likelihood of needing further surgery.

Ask What Is Included in Your Quote

Before booking basal cell removal, ask for a written quotation that explains exactly what you are paying for. A procedure advertised at a lower headline price may become more expensive if consultation, histology, hospital facilities and follow-up are charged separately.

Ask whether your quote includes the initial assessment, biopsy if required, surgeon's fee, hospital or theatre charges, local anaesthetic, histopathology, reconstruction and routine follow-up.

You should also ask what happens financially if laboratory testing shows that the cancer has not been completely removed. Standard excision occasionally requires a further procedure when cancer cells reach the edge of the removed specimen.

Do not choose treatment solely on price. The British Association of Dermatologists notes that treatment choice should consider the BCC's size, type and location alongside the patient's needs and overall health.

So, how much does basal cell removal cost? Current private UK examples range from around £870 for a relatively straightforward consultation, excision and histology pathway to £1,495 or more for hospital-based excision, with more complex reconstruction starting above £2,000 at some providers. These are examples rather than universal prices.

The only reliable way to know your cost is to have the lesion assessed and receive a treatment plan based on its location, size and complexity. Contact Dr Arif Aslam's team to arrange a specialist consultation and obtain a personalised quotation for your basal cell removal.
