Part of why this pattern is easy to miss is that direct costs, the medications and procedures that show up on an invoice, are only one piece of it. Indirect costs, lost productivity, disability, and the burden absorbed by family caregivers, have been found in research to rival or exceed the direct medical spending associated with the same conditions once both are fully accounted for. A condition that's technically "managed" may still carry a real and growing cost that a single medical bill never captures.

 

This is part of why some researchers have proposed shifting the underlying question a course of care is built to answer. Rather than asking only how to make a symptom more tolerable, a growing body of research asks how care can address factors contributing to recurring symptoms over time, a framework built around improving long-term outcomes rather than optimizing a single visit.
