IPL 2026: Five Possible Overseas Replacements for CSK after Nathan Ellis’ Injury

The "Yellow Army" has hit a significant speed bump before the first ball of IPL 2026 has even been bowled. Australian pace sensation Nathan Ellis has been ruled out of the entire tournament due to a hamstring injury.

With the season opener against Rajasthan Royals on March 30 fast approaching, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has confirmed that the franchise is officially Diamond Exchange 99 "on the hunt" for a replacement. For a team that already saw their primary death-overs weapon, Matheesha Pathirana, move to KKR for a staggering INR 18 crore, the loss of Ellis is a tactical nightmare.

Here are five overseas fast bowlers CSK could target to save their death-overs' woes.

1. Gerald Coetzee (South Africa)

Base Price: INR 2 Crore

Coetzee is perhaps the most exciting name left on the "unsold" list from the 2026 mega auction. Known as the "Karate Kid" for his high-intensity celebrations and fiery pace, Coetzee brings the aggressive "wicket-taking" intent that CSK often lacks in the middle and death overs. While he can be slightly expensive, his ability to hit the deck hard and clock 145kmph+ makes him a top-tier replacement.

2. Jhye Richardson (Australia)

Base Price: INR 1.5 Crore

If CSK wants a "like-for-like" replacement in terms of nationality and skillset, Jhye Richardson is the man. Recently returned to full fitness and coming off a solid Big Bash League campaign, Richardson possesses a lethal yorker and deceptive slower balls—the exact tools Ellis was expected to use at the Chepauk. His experience in high-pressure T20 scenarios makes him a plug-and-play option.

3. Spencer Johnson (Australia)

Base Price: INR 1.5 Crore

CSK has traditionally loved left-arm variety (think Doug Bollinger or Mustafizur Rahman). Spencer Johnson offers that "X-factor" left-arm angle combined with extreme pace. Standing tall and capable of generating uncomfortable bounce, Johnson could provide a different dimension to an attack that currently relies heavily on the swing of Matt Henry and Khaleel Ahmed.

4. Alzarri Joseph (West Indies)

Base Price: INR 2 Crore

A seasoned IPL campaigner, Alzarri Joseph knows the subcontinental conditions well. He holds the record for the best bowling figures in IPL history (6/12) and has a knack for picking up wickets in clusters. For a captain like Ruturaj Gaikwad, having a bowler who can handle the pressure of the 20th over is a necessity, and Joseph has the temperament to do just that.

5. Riley Meredith (Australia)

Base Price: INR 1.5 Crore

If CSK is looking for pure, unadulterated speed, Meredith is the answer. He is consistently one of the fastest bowlers in the world and has been a reliable performer in the BBL and previous IPL stints. While he might lack the "cutters" that thrive on a slow Chennai track, his raw pace can hurry even the best of batters on the flatter away pitches.

The Verdict: Who should CSK pick?

While Matt Henry is already in the squad and likely to start, he is more of a new-ball specialist. To fill the specific "death overs" hole left by Ellis, Jhye Richardson or Gerald Coetzee appear to be the smartest tactical moves.

Richardson offers the control and variations suited for Chepauk, while Coetzee offers the raw intimidation factor. Regardless of who they pick, the management needs to act fast to ensure the new recruit integrates into the "MS Dhoni-Ruturaj Gaikwad" system before the Guwahati opener.

What do you think, CSK fans? Who would you pick to lead the pace attack? Let us know in the comments!
