Is the Sepsis Diagnostics Market Ready for a Technology Overhaul?

34

Sepsis is a medical emergency in which every hour counts. Hospitals are under pressure to identify the infection and the pathogen behind it faster, and that pressure is turning sepsis diagnostics into one of the more closely watched areas of clinical testing. Here is where the market stands and who is competing in it, based on Grand View Research's latest report.

Market Snapshot & Projections

The global sepsis diagnostics market was valued at USD 1.2 billion in 2025. It is estimated at USD 1.3 billion in 2026 and is projected to reach USD 2.3 billion by 2033, a CAGR of 8.4% over 2026-2033.

What is driving growth

  • The disease burden is large. According to a March 2026 CDC report, at least 1.7 million U.S. adults and more than 18,000 children develop sepsis each year. One in three adults who die in U.S. hospitals had sepsis during their stay.
  • Hospital-acquired infections keep feeding demand. The CDC estimates roughly 1 in 31 U.S. hospital patients acquires such an infection, often through catheters or surgical procedures, and these can progress to sepsis.
  • New technology is arriving. Examples include Roche's 2024 distribution deal with Prenosis for the AI-based ImmunoScore, and Inflammatix's TriVerity Test System, which received FDA clearance in January 2025 and distinguishes bacterial from viral infection while gauging severity.

What is holding it back

  • Advanced molecular and multiplex platforms need heavy investment in equipment, software integration, training, and consumables. Many hospitals, especially in low- and middle-income countries and smaller community facilities, still rely on conventional microbiology because of budget limits and uneven reimbursement.

Where the opportunity is

  • Rapid molecular and point-of-care testing. Multiplex PCR, microfluidics, biosensors, and portable devices are bringing faster answers to emergency departments and ICUs. They also support antimicrobial stewardship by cutting unnecessary antibiotic use.

Regional view: North America led in 2025 with a 44.4% revenue share, with the U.S. the largest market in the region. Asia Pacific is the fastest-growing region, driven by high infectious-disease prevalence in countries like China and India and by growing adoption of POC devices, next-generation sequencing, and AI.

Competitive Landscape

  • Well-established players (BD, Thermo Fisher, Danaher, Roche, Philips, Bruker) rely on broad portfolios, global distribution, and the ability to offer end-to-end solutions from sample collection through clinical decision support. Their weaknesses are slower adoption of niche technologies and heavier exposure to pricing and reimbursement pressure.
  • Emerging and specialized players (bioMérieux, Cepheid, Luminex, Immunexpress) focus on rapid pathogen identification, syndromic panels, and host-response biomarkers. They are agile and deeply specialized, but less diversified and more dependent on partnerships to scale.

Recent strategic moves

  • Oct 2024: Trinity Biotech took a 12.5% stake in Novus Diagnostics to speed up point-of-care sepsis testing.
  • Apr 2024: Roche partnered with Prenosis to distribute the AI-driven ImmunoScore.
  • Nov 2023: Danaher teamed up with the University of Oxford to use Cepheid's rapid molecular technology to identify sepsis subtypes.
  • Feb 2023: Immunexpress launched its SeptiCyte Rapid test in the U.S., with results in about an hour.
  • Jan 2023: Cytovale launched its FDA-authorized IntelliSep test for emergency departments.

Partnerships, acquisitions, and AI integration are the dominant strategies, with large players adding specialist technologies and specialists using larger partners to reach more markets.

The Bottom Line

Demand for faster sepsis diagnosis is strong, and the shift toward molecular, automated, and point-of-care testing is just getting started. Cost and reimbursement barriers will keep conventional methods dominant for now, but the 8.4% CAGR points to steady change. Vendors, investors, and healthcare providers who track these shifts early will be better positioned.
