New Jersey's Non-Discrimination Concerns and the State-by-State Puzzle of the U.S. Concierge Medicine Market

Long waits, rushed visits, and a shrinking supply of primary care physicians are pushing more patients and doctors toward membership-based care. According to Grand View Research, the U.S. concierge medicine market was valued at USD 7.35 billion in 2024. It is on track to become a much larger segment of American healthcare by the end of the decade.

Market Size and Growth Projections

The market is estimated at USD 8.09 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 13.23 billion by 2030, a CAGR of 10.33% from 2025 to 2030. Grand View Research attributes this to rising patient awareness of the model's benefits, more physicians adopting it, and the ongoing primary care shortage.

Two segments stand out:

  • Ownership: Group ownership led in 2024 with a 64.92% revenue share and is expected to grow fastest, at a CAGR of 10.97%. Groups spread administrative and facility costs across physicians, which supports competitive pricing and healthier margins. Standalone practices are also expected to grow, driven by physician career satisfaction and higher earnings.
  • Specialty: Primary care held the largest share in 2024 at 26.72% and is projected to grow at the fastest rate, 10.78% CAGR. Internal medicine is another strong performer, supported by the rising prevalence of conditions like diabetes and hypertension.

Key Drivers and Trends

  1. Access gaps in traditional care. Wait times for new-patient appointments in major U.S. cities range from roughly 27 to 70 days, according to a 2024 Association of Health Care Journalists article. Concierge practices offer a faster, more personal alternative.
  2. A deepening physician shortage. The Association of American Medical Colleges projects a shortfall of up to 124,000 physicians by 2034. Two in five physicians are considering leaving their practice within five years. Primary care is the first point of contact for most patients, so the shortage feeds demand for concierge models.
  3. Physician appeal. Concierge physicians typically see 6 to 8 patients a day, an 80% to 90% reduction from traditional volumes. Despite this, they tend to earn more. Burnout is a factor too: women made up 48% of physicians reporting burnout in the 2020 Medscape report, and concierge practice gives them more control over their schedules.
  4. Technology and innovation. Innovation is moderate, centered on telemedicine and virtual consultations. In September 2024, AvaSure partnered with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and NVIDIA to develop an AI-powered virtual concierge for patient care and clinical workflows.
  5. A complex regulatory environment. There is no single federal law governing concierge medicine. Practices must navigate HIPAA, insurance rules, and state licensing, along with the Stark Law and the Anti-Kickback Statute. Some states worry about access for patients who cannot afford retainer fees.
  6. Hybrid models and partnerships. Strategic alliances are shaping the market. Examples include Concierge Choice Physicians' hybrid programs and BayCare Health System's 2024 partnership with Metro Development Group.

Key Industry Players

The market is fragmented, but a few names stand out for the breadth of their physician networks. MDVIP, which has more than 1,000 affiliated physicians nationwide, Signature MD, and Crossover Health are cited as leaders. MDVIP and PartnerMD use membership-based models in which an annual fee covers expanded access and personalized primary care. Signature MD offers physicians full, hybrid, and segmented conversion options.

Other profiled companies include:

  • Specialdocs Consultants, LLC
  • PartnerMD
  • Concierge Consultants & Cardiology
  • Castle Connolly Private Health Partners
  • Peninsula Doctor
  • Campbell Family Medicine
  • Destination Health MDI
  • Priority Physicians, Inc.
  • U.S. San Diego Health

Several of these players focus on converting more physicians to concierge medicine by offering legal, operational, and marketing support.

Geographic Trends

The report covers the U.S. as a whole and does not break the market down state by state. Still, its examples show where activity is concentrated and how it is spreading:

  • High expansion nationwide. The report rates geographic expansion as high, as patients seek personalized access that traditional models don't offer.
  • Texas. In November 2023, seven more physicians from the Medical Clinic of Houston joined Concierge Choice Physicians' Hybrid Choice program.
  • Georgia. In July 2024, a new MDVIP-affiliated primary care practice opened in Metro Atlanta.
  • Florida. BayCare Health System partnered with Metro Development Group in September 2024 to bring concierge services to Pasco County communities.
  • New York. Four more physicians from Weill Cornell Medicine's Primary Care Division joined the Hybrid Choice program in February 2024.
  • New Jersey. Officials have indicated that concierge agreements may conflict with rules requiring non-discriminatory access within provider networks. This illustrates how state-level regulation can shape where and how the model grows.

What This Means for Stakeholders

Providers, investors, and health systems can all find opportunity here, including physician network conversions, hybrid models, and technology-enabled access. Success will depend on navigating state-specific regulation and differentiating in a fragmented field.
