Market Overview

The global 5G NTN market was valued at USD 9.07 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 103.32 billion by 2034, growing at a CAGR of 31.04% from 2026 to 2034, according to Polaris Market Research. North America held the largest share, at 38.7% in 2025. The report's future outlook is positive, with rising emphasis on satellite-terrestrial convergence and growing demand for ubiquitous connectivity in remote locations, maritime settings and disaster-affected areas.

Satellite-Terrestrial Convergence in Practice

Traditional terrestrial 5G networks use earth-based cell towers, while 5G NTN uses satellites, drones or other aerial means to provide cellular service. Polaris says terrestrial networks provide significantly faster speeds and lower latency but cannot serve many areas, particularly rural, oceanic and mountainous terrain. The combination of terrestrial and satellite networks provides broader coverage and greater reliability than terrestrial networks alone. This satellite-terrestrial convergence is supported by standardized procedures that allow NTN to interwork with terrestrial radio access networks and the 5G core.

Massive Machine-Type Communications

By application, the eMBB segment dominated with a 48.9% share in 2025. The massive machine-type communications segment is expected to record a CAGR of 34.5%, due to the growth in connected devices worldwide. Sensors, meters, trackers and other IoT-enabled devices are being adopted across industries, and many are deployed in remote areas with limited or no cellular connectivity. The report states that 5G NTN supports tracking and monitoring for such devices and, through M2M satellite communication, can enable real-time monitoring, remote asset management and automated decision-making across dispersed operations.

NB-IoT NTN and Satellite IoT

Standards work has opened the door for satellite IoT. According to the report, Release 17 supported NR-NTN and IoT-NTN based on NB-IoT and eMTC, Release 19 adds store-and-forward for deep IoT, and Release 20 studies include voice over NB-IoT NTN, including GEO. Commercial activity reflects this direction. In June 2026, WiSig Networks and Viasat announced a partnership to develop a 3GPP Release 17-compliant NB-IoT NTN chipset and module for Viasat's L-band ecosystem, targeting maritime, government, enterprise and safety-of-life applications. In December 2025, Myriota launched HyperPulse, a commercial 5G non-terrestrial IoT network across five countries.

Maritime and Aviation Applications

Maritime connectivity is one of the key areas of the industry. 5G NTN can provide reliable connectivity for ships and airplanes beyond the reach of mobile phone networks by using satellites as relays, supporting internet, communication and navigation services. The report's use cases include ship-to-shore and ship-to-ship communications, fleet telemetry and safety IoT, and in-flight passenger broadband. Polaris says the current lack of coverage over oceans and airspace drives development, and demand for maritime connectivity is fueled by the need to keep transport connected during operations.

Disaster Recovery and Emergency Communication

5G NTN can play a major role in disaster recovery by providing emergency communication when natural disasters disrupt conventional mobile networks. If infrastructure is damaged, NTN relays can keep the network functional, allowing emergency crews to coordinate their response and assist affected populations. The report lists network resilience during disasters and public protection and disaster relief broadband among its use cases. Growing concern with managing the consequences of natural disasters is expected to drive this application area, and disaster recovery operations are among the key applications the report names.

Aerospace, Defense and Component Insights

The aerospace and defense segment is projected to register the highest end-user CAGR, at 35.7%, because military forces operate globally across remote areas, oceans and conflict zones. By component, hardware held the largest share, at 57.6% in 2025, while software is projected to register a CAGR of 33.8%. The remote location segment accounted for the largest share, at 46.5% in 2025, driven by limited access to high-speed internet in remote areas.

Restraints to Watch

The report identifies several restraints. Satellite constellation development and launch involve high costs, and integrating with existing 5G networks adds further cost. Integration costs slow commercialization particularly in developing countries, where telecom operators are less inclined to adopt new expensive technologies. Signal delay, weather-related interruptions and network complexity also limit growth. Cybersecurity is a major challenge because the network spans satellites, airplanes and terrestrial components, and satellite links can be vulnerable to jamming and spoofing.

Key Players and Recent Developments

Key players include Anritsu Corporation, AST SpaceMobile, Counterpoint Technology, Druid Software, EchoStar Corporation, Ericsson, Gatehouse Satcom A/S, Intelsat, Keysight Technologies, MediaTek Inc, Nelco, Nokia, Omnispace, Qualcomm Technologies Inc., Radisys Corporation, Rohde & Schwarz, Sateliot, SES S.A., Skylo, SoftBank Group Corporation, Spirent Communications, Telesat, Thales Group, Viasat, VIAVI Solutions Inc. and ZTE Corporation. In September 2026, the Mobile Satellite Services Association announced an expanded Reference Architecture to address challenges in NTN systems.

Conclusion

The 5G NTN market is moving from concept to commercial deployment across IoT, transport and emergency services. Advances in satellite-terrestrial convergence, massive machine-type communications, NB-IoT NTN, maritime connectivity and disaster recovery applications show where Polaris Market Research expects demand to build as the market grows toward USD 103.32 billion by 2034.
