Choosing an EDC Knife: What to Look for

While a knife might not be the only thing in your EDC loadout, there are countless people around the country that would feel utterly naked without one. Start carrying one and you might find that this phenomenon befalls you before too long, too.

With that said, if you’re looking at choosing your first EDC knife, here are a few things to consider.

Fixed or Folding?

Most people prefer folders for EDC, but there are some that prefer smaller fixed blades, as well. Whereas folders are convenient and store easily, and don’t require you to carry a sheath, it is also true that fixed blades are simpler, with no deployment methods or locks that can fail. It’s something to keep in mind.

Size and Weight

Size and weight are arguably the two most important things to evaluate in a potential new EDC knife. Most people prefer a blade between 2 and 3 inches for everyday carry, but you might find that something larger, or even smaller, is better for your purposes.

As for weight, there’s no hard or fast rule here. Just keep in mind that lighter knives will carry more easily and you might not even notice they’re in your pocket until you need to draw them.

Blade Profile

Blade profile is an important determinant of the suitability of an EDC knife. Many people prefer the utility of straight-back and drop-point knives because they are simple and versatile, and have strong points. Spear-point blades are also highly versatile.

Blades with swept profiles, like skinners and trailing point knives, are better for making long, arcing cuts.

Then there are blades with downturned spines and somewhat oblique points, like sheepsfoot and wharncliffe-style blades. These have stouter tips that are less likely to break with hard use, though they are generally not as effective for piercing tasks.

Needle-pointed and clip-point profiles have finer points that are better for piercing and detail work, but they are also more prone to tip breakage, so that is something to keep in mind.

Deployment Method

A folding EDC knife can have one or a combination of deployment methods. Arguably the most common are flipper tabs, thumb studs, and thumb holes.

Flipper tabs are likely the easiest to learn to use, and are naturally ambidextrous. Thumb studs are next; they are relatively easy to use, but to be ambidextrous there must be studs on both sides of the blade. Thumb holes take a little getting used to, but they are naturally ambidextrous, like flipper tabs.

There are also assisted openers and automatics that are easier to learn to use.

Carry Method

Carry method is something you will also want to consider. Naturally a fixed blade will need a sheath, but folders generally come with pocket clips, some of which are reversible and which allow for tip up or down carry on either side of the knife.

Others can simply be carried free in a pocket. No carry method is better than any other. Just make sure you get what works for you.

In the Market for a New EDC Knife?

The most important thing to keep in mind when shopping for a new EDC knife is that you get what works for you. One EDC knife might work for one person but not for another, so it’s important you consider your own needs and get a model that meets them.

You can shop a wide assortment of EDC knives and other daily carry tools online at The Knife Connection, along with accessories like custom scales, sheaths and fire starters. Check out their collection for some inspiration and if you have questions, get in touch with them directly.
