Preventing Damage to Your Replica Hobbit Swords

If you’re a collector that has some swords from The Hobbit in his (or her) collection, and you like to use what you own, here are some high level tips to prevent damage to your replica swords and weapons.

  • Do not use a sword for live cutting practice if it is not expressly listed as battle-ready. Battle ready swords are forged from alloys that are suitable for live use, tempered so as to resist shattering or breakage, and feature full-tang construction that can withstand the rigors of live play. Never attempt to use a sword that is only intended for display as a replica for live use or you will likely damage it, injure yourself, or worse.
  • Be very careful when handling a sword even if it has a false edge. A false edge, or even a dull edge, can be very dangerous if handled carelessly. Always mind your immediate vicinity when handling an unsheathed sword and move slowly, carefully and deliberately.
  • Avoid touching the blade if you can. There are oils and salts on your skin that will damage the finish of a sword’s steel blade if they come into contact with it, and which can accelerate rust and corrosion. There’s no real reason to touch the blade with your bare hands anyway, so avoid doing this.
  • If you do use it for live cutting practice, cut only suitable targets. If you have a replica sword from The Hobbit, only use it for appropriate cutting practice, on suitable targets. Some good targets include rolled mats, cardboard and paper targets, fruits and vegetables, and filled water bottles.
  • Never throw it or stick the tip in the ground. You may have seen it in a movie, but you should never throw a sword or stick the blade in the ground, as this will damage it. Also, there are abrasives in the ground, like sand and rocks, that will scratch the blade and which will dull the edge.
  • Don’t strike unsuitable objects. A sword may be a weapon but it is not designed to withstand impact against hard objects like brick, stone, masonry, or structural lumber. Doing so will just damage it.
  • Store it out of its scabbard. Your replica sword is meant to be displayed, but even if that weren’t the case, storing it in its scabbard will trap moisture next to it that will accelerate rust and corrosion.
  • Periodically treat the blade with oil or microcrystalline wax. Every once in a while, apply a drop or two of knife or gun oil to the blade of your sword, or treat it with microcrystalline wax that will help create a moisture barrier and will protect it against rust and corrosion.
