Lupus Nephritis Drugs Market to Reach USD 5.17 Billion by 2034 as Treatment Options Broaden

The lupus nephritis drugs market is entering a period of structural change as new treatment mechanisms reach patients and the late-stage pipeline widens. According to Polaris Market Research, the market was valued at USD 1.95 billion in 2025, is estimated at USD 2.17 billion in 2026, and is projected to reach USD 5.17 billion by 2034, registering a CAGR of 10.15% from 2026 to 2034. Lupus nephritis is kidney inflammation caused by systemic lupus erythematosus, and persistent inflammation can lead to renal impairment and, in severe cases, renal failure.

Lupus Nephritis Drugs Market Growth and Industry Outlook

Market growth is supported by the expanding use of targeted therapies for renal involvement, the availability of three FDA-approved lupus nephritis drugs, and continued clinical development of therapies aimed at different disease mechanisms. Around 60% of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) develop lupus nephritis, and rising disease prevalence continues to propel demand for treatment.

The treatment landscape has moved from two commercial mechanisms to three in only five years. GSK’s Benlysta (belimumab) received U.S. approval for lupus nephritis in 2020, Aurinia Pharmaceuticals’ Lupkynis followed in January 2021, and Genentech’s Gazyva (obinutuzumab) was approved in October 2025. In April 2026, the FDA accepted Genentech’s application to extend Gazyva to SLE, with a decision expected by December 2026.

Key Market Drivers and Emerging Trends

Physicians can now choose treatments that act on specific immune pathways instead of relying only on conventional immunosuppressants and corticosteroids, which remain part of background care. Oral treatment availability is a notable theme, since Lupkynis is the only oral therapy specifically approved for lupus nephritis and offers an alternative to infusion-based biologics. Aurinia Pharmaceuticals reported total revenue of USD 77.7 million for the three months ended March 31, 2026, a 24% increase from USD 62.5 million a year earlier. An August 2026 patent settlement with Teva Pharmaceuticals also blocks generic versions of Lupkynis in the U.S. until December 7, 2036.

The pipeline is broadening as well. Novartis’s ianalumab and AstraZeneca’s anifrolumab are in Phase III, while CAR T cell therapy candidates from Autolus Therapeutics, Cabaletta Bio, Adicet Bio and Kyverna Therapeutics are among the fastest-emerging approaches. Risk remains part of development, as Novartis’s secukinumab did not meet its primary endpoint in its Phase III lupus nephritis trial.

Segment and Application Insights

The report analyzes the market by drug class, route of administration and distribution channel. Anti CD20 monoclonal antibodies held a 14.56% share in 2025, supported by the availability of a treatment directed at CD20-positive B cells. Calcineurin inhibitors are expected to grow at a 10.84% CAGR during the forecast period, helped by the administration advantage of an oral option. By route, oral administration held the largest share at 47.62% in 2025, and hospital pharmacies led distribution with a 41.18% revenue share because treatment is often delivered and monitored by healthcare providers.

Regional Market Perspective

North America led the market with a 43.08% share in 2025, supported by established specialty care infrastructure, access to approved therapies and strong pharmaceutical activity. Clinical evidence also underpins the region: in the Phase III REGENCY study of 271 adults, 46.4% of patients receiving obinutuzumab achieved complete renal response at week 76, compared with 33.1% on placebo alongside standard therapy. Europe represented 26.32% of the market in 2025, and the Middle East and Africa held 4.44%. Asia Pacific is projected to be the fastest-growing region at a 12.74% CAGR, supported by a large underlying patient population and regulatory access such as Japan’s approval of Lupkynis for lupus nephritis.

Competitive Landscape

The market remains concentrated around three approved product holders: GSK, Genentech within the Roche Group, and Aurinia Pharmaceuticals, with Otsuka Pharmaceutical acting as Aurinia’s partner for Lupkynis outside the U.S. Competition is shaped by mechanism, formulation, renal efficacy, indication breadth, patent duration and the ability to reach additional patient populations. In August 2026, Aurinia reported second quarter total revenue of USD 83.2 million and initiated the Phase 4 PRESERVE study, which combines Lupkynis with belimumab, obinutuzumab or anifrolumab. Aurinia also agreed in March 2026 to acquire Kezar Life Sciences, a transaction that has since closed.

Future Market Outlook

Looking ahead, the lupus nephritis drugs market is likely to be shaped by regulatory decisions, pipeline progress and wider geographic access. Obinutuzumab’s path from lupus nephritis toward SLE shows how a kidney-focused indication can become an entry point into broader autoimmune treatment, while the research behind the report did not identify confirmed lupus nephritis-specific approvals for the three approved therapies in China or India. With targeted therapies, calcineurin inhibitors, anti CD20 monoclonal antibodies and CAR T cell therapy programs all advancing, Polaris Market Research projects the market to reach USD 5.17 billion by 2034.
