Chips, Cracks, and Calibration: The New Rules of Windshield Repair

Recent findings from Market Research Future indicate that the automotive glass repair and replacement services market chip segment — the repair of chips, cracks, and small damage before it spreads — sits at the centre of the glass repair industry's economics and technical evolution. The automotive glass repair and replacement services market is projected to grow from USD 32 billion in 2024 to USD 45 billion by 2035, and chip repair is the most frequently performed service in the category.

Why Chip Repair Matters

Chips and cracks are the most common form of glass damage, caused by road debris, gravel, and temperature stress. If left untreated, a small chip can spread into a long crack requiring full windshield replacement. Repairing a chip early preserves the original windshield, avoids the cost and complexity of replacement, and maintains the factory seal and sensor integration. This is why chip repair is the first line of defence for vehicle owners and insurers alike.

The Repair Process

Chip repair involves injecting a specially formulated resin into the damaged area, curing it with UV light, and polishing the surface to restore clarity and strength. The process takes less than an hour for a single chip, and it can be performed in-shop or via mobile service. Modern resins and injection tools have improved repair quality to the point where repaired chips are often nearly invisible, and the repair restores structural integrity sufficient to prevent spreading.

When Repair Becomes Replacement

Not all damage can be repaired. Cracks longer than a banknote, damage in the driver's primary line of sight, damage at the edge of the windshield, and damage that has penetrated both glass layers typically require replacement. Replacement also becomes necessary when the damage compromises the windshield's role in structural support or sensor mounting. Service providers must assess damage accurately and advise customers honestly, because a failed repair leads to replacement anyway and damages trust.

ADAS and the Calibration Requirement

The biggest change in windshield work is calibration. Windshields now host cameras for lane-keeping, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control, and these systems require precise camera alignment relative to the vehicle's geometry. After windshield replacement, and sometimes after repair if the camera is disturbed, calibration is required to restore system function. This adds time, cost, and equipment requirements to every windshield job, and shops that cannot calibrate must subcontract or decline the work.

Mobile Service and Convenience

Mobile service commands the largest share due to its convenience and timeliness, and chip repair is particularly well-suited to mobile delivery. Technicians can perform repairs in driveways, car parks, and workplaces, saving customers time and reducing vehicle downtime. Mobile units equipped with the necessary tools and materials have expanded access to repair, and this trend is encouraging service providers to invest in mobile capability.

Insurance and Repair Economics

Insurance economics shape chip repair demand. Many insurers waive the deductible for chip repair, because repairing a chip is far cheaper than replacing a windshield. This creates a strong incentive for vehicle owners to repair promptly, and it drives volume for service providers. Insurers also prefer repair for sustainability reasons, and repair-first policies are becoming more common as insurers seek to control costs.

Sustainability and Repair

Sustainability is increasingly part of the case for repair. Repairing a chip avoids the manufacturing and transport of a new windshield, reducing the environmental footprint of the repair, and it keeps the original glass in service. As insurers and fleets adopt sustainability targets, repair-first policies align with their goals, and service providers that emphasise repair over replacement gain preferred-supplier status.

Recent Industry Developments

Safelite AutoGlass announced a partnership with a leading telematics provider to integrate advanced data analytics, enabling predictive maintenance alerts for vehicle owners. Gerber Collision & Glass launched a training programme aimed at upskilling technicians in advanced repair techniques and customer service excellence. Belron unveiled a sustainability initiative focused on recycling glass and reducing waste, and service providers continue to invest in ADAS calibration capability.

Challenges Facing the Chip Segment

The chip segment faces challenges. ADAS calibration requirements add time and cost to windshield work. Skilled technician shortages constrain capacity. Competition from national networks and independent shops is intense. And insurer pricing pressure compresses margins.

The Road Ahead

The future of windshield chip repair will be shaped by ADAS calibration, mobile service, and sustainability. As vehicles become more sensor-dependent and as insurers favour repair, chip repair will remain the first line of defence. The providers that invest in calibration capability and mobile convenience will capture the greatest rewards.

For anyone analysing the automotive glass repair and replacement services market, the chip segment offers a window into the industry's future. It is where early intervention, calibration, and convenience converge, and where the investments made today will determine how quickly tomorrow's windshields are restored.
