Carbon Dioxide Market Expansion: Carbon Capture Innovation and Industrial Applications

Valued at USD 8.13 billion in 2024, the global carbon dioxide market is projected to reach USD 8.50 billion in 2025 and USD 12.50 billion by 2034, growing at a CAGR of 4.37% during the forecast period 2025–2034. Key players include Linde PLC, Air Liquide, Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., Gulf Cryo, AIR WATER INC, Aker Solutions, Aramco, BOSCO INDIA, Jinhong Gas Co., Ltd, LanzaTech, SABIC, SICGIL Industrial Gases Ltd, and UNIVERSAL AIR PRODUCTS PVT LTD.

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is a colorless, odorless gas that plays a crucial role in the carbon cycle. Emerging technologies are positioning it as a resource rather than a waste product, supported by carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) approaches that convert captured CO₂ into synthetic fuels, chemicals, plastics, and solid carbonates for construction materials. Artificial intelligence further optimizes capture processes, supports carbon accounting and compliance, and reduces downtime through predictive maintenance at production and capture facilities.

Oil and Gas and Beverage Applications Lead Carbon Dioxide Market Demand

The oil and gas segment held 66.19% of revenue in 2024, reflecting the need to maximize recovery from aging fields. Companies rely heavily on CO₂ for enhanced oil recovery, injecting it into reservoirs to increase crude output. Rising exploration, production, and supply investment, particularly in North America and the Middle East, supports the segment; the International Energy Agency projects that the Middle East will invest about USD 130 billion in oil and gas supply in 2025.

Beverage demand is a second pillar. Manufacturers use CO₂ to create the fizz in sodas, sparkling waters, and beers, and the British Soft Drinks Association reports that carbonated drinks accounted for 38.6% of the UK soft drinks market. The expansion of craft breweries and artisanal soda producers further lifts consumption, and the food and beverages segment is expected to grow at a rapid pace as demand rises for packaged and frozen foods. Producers also use CO₂ for chilling, freezing, and modified atmosphere packaging to preserve freshness and extend shelf life.

Polymers, Urbanization, and Source Dynamics

Growth in polymer production is fueling demand because polyurethanes and polycarbonates can incorporate CO₂ as a feedstock, while CO₂ also serves as a blowing agent in polymer foam. European plastic production rose to 57.2 million tonnes in 2021 from 53.9 million tonnes in 2020. Urbanization is another driver: the World Bank expects the urban population to more than double by 2050, raising needs for food production and refrigeration as well as energy demand.

By source, the ethyl alcohol segment accounted for 31.46% of revenue in 2024, supported by the integration of ethanol plants with capture technologies. The substitute natural gas segment is projected to register a 4.76% CAGR from 2025 to 2034 amid decarbonization support and expanding green hydrogen and power-to-gas investment. Its production process generates concentrated CO₂ that industries can efficiently capture and reuse.

Regional Outlook and Industry Developments

North America accounted for 38.38% of global revenue in 2024, with the U.S. holding 75.21% of the regional share owing to extensive CO₂ pipeline infrastructure and federal 45Q tax credits. Europe is projected to register a 3.83% CAGR on the back of the EU Green Deal and carbon utilization innovation. In Asia Pacific, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme expects Asia’s urban population to grow by 50% by 2050.

Recent developments reflect momentum in carbon markets. In the first quarter of 2025, around 780,000 CDR credits were contracted, a 122% increase from the first quarter of 2024. In January 2025, Climate TRACE began monthly greenhouse gas data releases, reporting the first post-COVID year-over-year decline in global CO₂ emissions, including drops of 1.1% in China and 0.28% in the U.S. High energy consumption in capturing and storing CO₂ remains the key restraint, but demand across oil and gas, beverages, and plastics keeps the carbon dioxide market on a steady growth path.
