Crude Palm Oil Holds 76.7% Share: Decoding Product Dynamics in the Palm Oil Market
Palm oil is one of the most widely traded vegetable oils in the world. It appears in cooking oils, instant noodles, margarine and shampoo, and increasingly in biodiesel blends. Grand View Research values the global palm oil market at USD 75.5 billion in 2025. It estimates the market at USD 78.3 billion in 2026 and projects USD 113.9 billion by 2035, a 4.3% CAGR from 2026 to 2035.
Current Price Dynamics & Trajectory
Palm oil pricing is cyclical. Prices swing with plantation yields, weather, government export and sustainability policy, and the price of crude oil. Palm-based biodiesel competes with fossil fuel, so energy prices spill over into the edible oil market.
The value trajectory is steady rather than explosive. The market is expected to add roughly USD 35 billion between 2025 and 2035. Two forces support that path:
- Food demand. Palm oil is cheap, stable at high temperatures and long-lasting. That makes it a default ingredient for bakery, confectionery, snacks and packaged foods. Urbanization and growth in quick-service restaurants across Asia Pacific, Africa and Latin America add to the demand.
- Biofuel mandates. Governments in Asia, Europe and Latin America are pushing biodiesel blending to cut emissions and fossil fuel dependence. Palm oil's high yield makes it a favored feedstock, especially in Indonesia and Malaysia.
On the cost side, deforestation concerns and tighter traceability and certification requirements are raising compliance costs for producers. That pressure can feed through into pricing over the long term.

Market Breakdown & Segmentation
By nature: Conventional palm oil accounted for 93.4% of revenue in 2025, thanks to cost efficiency, consistent quality and established supply chains. Organic is much smaller but is forecast to grow fastest, at a 4.5% CAGR, as clean-label and ethically sourced products gain ground. RSPO and Fairtrade certifications are building buyer trust.
By product: Crude palm oil led with a 76.7% share in 2025 because of its volume, versatility and low cost. Palm kernel oil is the fastest-growing product at a 4.4% CAGR. Demand comes from specialty foods, cosmetics and personal care, and from its use as a cocoa butter substitute. RBD and fractionated palm oil complete the product lineup.
By application: Food and beverage dominated with 72.7% of 2025 revenue. Biofuel and energy is the fastest-growing application at a 4.2% CAGR, helped by supportive policy and energy security concerns. Personal care and cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and other uses make up the rest.
By region: Asia Pacific held 74.1% of the global market in 2025 and is expected to grow fastest. Indonesia accounts for 42.1% of the regional market and is the world's largest producer and exporter. Elsewhere:
- Europe: Demand is shaped by strict sustainability rules and a preference for certified, traceable palm oil. Germany leads, driven by its biofuel and food processing sectors.
- North America: The U.S. is growing on the back of food processing and personal care.
- Latin America: Rising urban populations and investment in local cultivation and processing are gradually reducing import dependence.
- Middle East & Africa: Demand for edible oils and biofuels is growing, and governments are working to secure edible oil supply chains.

Key Palm Oil Companies: Who's Leading the Market
The industry is moderately concentrated. ADM and Wilmar International lead on integrated operations that run from cultivation and processing to refining and global distribution. Smallholders and regional producers across Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America keep the landscape competitive.
- Wilmar International operates across food products, feed and industrial products, plantations and fertilizers. Its range includes consumer products, specialty fats and oleochemicals. In October 2024 it launched the PROSPEK program to support 26,000 smallholders in Indonesia.
- ADM procures, transports, stores, processes and merchandises agricultural commodities across four segments: agricultural services, corn processing, oilseed processing, and wild flavors and specialty ingredients.
The report groups the other major players as follows:
- Mature players: IOI Corporation Berhad, Kuala Lumpur Kepong Berhad, United Plantations Berhad, Kulim (Malaysia) Berhad, Asian Agri, Cargill and Agropalma. These companies focus on vertical integration, downstream processing and traceability. Their main exposure is crude palm oil price swings, weather-driven yield risk and rising compliance costs.
- Emerging players: PT Sampoerna Agro, Univanich Palm Oil, PT Bakrie Sumatera Plantations, Oleopalma, Natural Habitats and AEN Palm Oil. They compete through regional expansion and niche or specialty oil demand, but have less refining and distribution reach than the majors.
Capacity is also being added. In November 2025, GS Caltex and POSCO unveiled a 500-kiloton-per-year refinery in Balikpapan, Indonesia. It converts crude palm oil into refined edible oils and biodiesel feedstock.
The Bottom Line
Palm oil is a large, essential commodity with steady growth ahead. Food demand is the backbone of the market, biofuels are the fastest-growing application, and sustainability is the main source of both risk and opportunity. Producers that invest in certified, traceable supply chains are best placed to benefit.
