What Happens When You Install a Submersible Pump Too Shallow?
Installing a Submersible Pump requires more than dropping it into a borehole. Depth directly affects cooling, motor load, and discharge pressure. A mistake in setting depth can lead to frequent cycling or even sand locking. Let’s examine the technical constraints.
Depth-related factors to manage:
Maximum submersion depth (casing pressure rating)
Standard stainless steel housings withstand 300 meters (30 bar). Deep-well Submersible Pump models rated for 600 meters (60 bar) have thicker shells (minimum 3mm wall thickness). Exceeding this causes housing collapse at approximately 1.5× rated pressure.
Motor cooling requirement
Submersible motors rely on surrounding water velocity—at least 0.2 m/s past the shell. In a 6-inch well producing 50 m³/h, the annular velocity is roughly 0.4 m/s, adequate. Below 15 m³/h, install a cooling sleeve; otherwise, winding temperature exceeds 130°C, halving insulation life.
NPSH available vs. required
Every 10 meters of water depth adds 1 bar of suction head. For a Submersible Pump requiring 3 meters NPSH, install at least 5 meters below the lowest drawdown level. Failure to do so causes cavitation at flows above 80% BEP.
Sand settling depth
Set the pump intake 3–5 meters above the well bottom in sandy aquifers. A typical intake strainer with 1mm openings prevents 95% of particles >0.5mm. Without this gap, sand fills the annular space within 500 operating hours.
Cable length and voltage drop
For a 400V, 30 kW Submersible Pump at 200 meters depth, use 16 mm² copper cable. Voltage drop must stay below 3% (12V). Deeper installations (300 m) require 25 mm² cable; otherwise, starting torque drops 20%.
Critical warning: Never run a Submersible Pump above water level (even briefly). Dry running for 30 seconds raises shaft seal temperature from 40°C to 120°C, causing thermal cracking. Always install a level switch or dry-run protection relay set to 0.5 m above pump suction.
Proper depth planning ensures stable operation for 8–10 years without premature bearing or seal failure.
