Why PET Sheet is Used in Precision Components
Industrial engineering applications require materials that maintain performance under mechanical stress, temperature variation, and long-term operational use. Polyethylene terephthalate-based materials have become a common choice due to their stability and wear resistance.
A key advantage is dimensional stability. PET materials typically exhibit very low thermal expansion, around 6–8 × 10⁻⁵ /°C, which ensures components retain their shape during temperature fluctuations. This is critical in precision machinery, where even small deformation can affect performance.
Mechanical strength is another important factor. A PET Sheet can provide tensile strength exceeding 60 MPa, with flexural modulus values around 2.5–3.0 GPa. These properties allow it to be used in gears, guide rails, and structural support parts.
Wear resistance is particularly important in moving systems. PET demonstrates low friction behavior and can operate effectively in dry or slightly lubricated conditions. This reduces the need for additional lubrication systems in some mechanical assemblies.
In addition, PET materials absorb very little moisture, often below 0.2–0.3%. This is significantly lower than many engineering plastics, making them suitable for environments with humidity variation or water exposure.
Machining performance is also strong. PET Sheet can be cut, drilled, milled, and polished with standard CNC equipment. Tight tolerances are achievable, often within ±0.05 mm depending on thickness.
Typical thickness ranges used in engineering applications vary from 1 mm to 50 mm depending on load requirements. The material maintains performance in a temperature range from approximately -40°C to 70°C in continuous use.
Due to this combination of strength, stability, and machinability, PET materials are widely adopted in automation systems, food processing machinery components, and electrical insulation parts.
