The Publishing Mistake I Made With My First Book (And How I Fixed It)

My first book taught me more about publishing than any guide I read beforehand. Specifically, it taught me what happens when you skip steps to save time.

1. I published before the manuscript was truly ready

I was excited, and excitement made me impatient. I sent the book out for a single proofread pass and called it done. I gave the manuscript time to rest before editing, tested cover concepts against genre expectations, and started building an audience months before launch. I also brought in outside help for the parts I wasn't strong at.
