The Publishing Mistake I Made With My First Book (And How I Fixed It)

My first book taught me more about publishing than any guide I read beforehand. Specifically, it taught me what happens when you skip steps to save time.

1. I published before the manuscript was truly ready

I was excited, and excitement made me impatient. I sent the book out for a single proofread pass and called it done. Looking back, I probably should have explored book writing services in USA for a proper developmental pass before I ever hit publish. Readers noticed inconsistencies I had missed, and a few reviews mentioned it directly. That was a hard but useful lesson.

2. I underestimated how much the cover mattered

I designed my first cover myself, without much research into what my genre's readers expect visually. It didn't match reader expectations, and I believe it hurt how the book was perceived before anyone even opened it.

3. I had no plan for after publishing

I assumed the book would find readers on its own. It didn't. I had no email list, no website, and no plan for reaching anyone beyond people who already knew me.

How I approached my second book differently

For my second project, I slowed everything down. I gave the manuscript time to rest before editing, tested cover concepts against genre expectations, and started building an audience months before launch. I also brought in outside help for the parts I wasn't strong at. Working with Authors Dream for editing and formatting meant I could focus on the writing while someone experienced handled the technical side, and using a custom book making service meant design and formatting were handled together instead of me juggling separate vendors.

What changed as a result

The second launch felt calmer and more intentional. Sales were steadier, and the reviews reflected a more polished final product. Nothing about the process is complicated once you slow down and treat each stage with the attention it needs.

If you're working on your first book

Learn from what I got wrong: do not rush the edit, take cover design seriously, and start thinking about your readers before the book is finished, not after.
