Research suggests that one of the most significant advantages of in-wheel motors is their ability to deliver highly effective regenerative braking. The principle is similarly applied in electric scooters, where research has shown that implementing regenerative braking algorithms can significantly increase travel distance on a single charge.

Beyond energy recovery, regenerative braking with in-wheel motors offers superior vehicle control. Each wheel can be independently controlled, allowing for precise torque vectoring that enhances stability during braking and cornering. This independent control can mimic the effect of a limited-slip differential and improve traction in various conditions. The ability to finely control braking force at each wheel also contributes to smoother, more controlled deceleration, improving the driving experience. Coordination control methods have been developed to balance energy regeneration with vehicle dynamics, ensuring that vibration is suppressed while maximizing energy capture.

As OEMs like Renault explore in-wheel motors for performance vehicles, the ability to recover energy and reduce reliance on traditional friction brakes is a compelling advantage. The development of scalable motor systems from companies like YASA and Protean Electric, which prioritize both power output and efficient energy recuperation, will be crucial for expanding the market for in-wheel motors across electric vehicles, from high-performance cars to commercial and two-wheeler applications.
